The Krimmler Wasserfälle waterfalls, on the Krimmler Ache, provide a unique natural spectacle in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Numerous viewing platforms along the route make it possible to get a good view of this impressive waterfall which plunges down into the depths over a total of 380 metres, making it the highest waterfall in Europe and the fifth highest in the world. During the snow melt, up to 390,000 litres of water per second thunder down to the valley first over a gneiss zone and then over a softer slate zone. A volume of water such as this produces dense spray that allows special vegetation to thrive in the vicinity of the falls.
