The name Felber Tauern is very old and means "high mountain". At the times of the migration of nations a mule track led over the "Hohen Berg" and over the centuries lively trade traffic developed. The Tauernhäuser houses gave travellers protection and they still exist today. Because of its isolation from North Tyrol East Tyrol developed only very slowly over a long period of time and the population was poor. That is why one began to build the Felber Tauern Tunnel in the 50s. It was officially opened in 1967 and was the first tunnel through the main alpine range and created an economic upswing in East Tyrol.
