The Timmelsjoch is one of the highest passes in the Eastern Alps. In former times in the spring shepherds used to drive their animals from South Tyrol onto the pastures in the Ötztal and merchants transported their wares. A stretch of the old smuggler trail can still be seen. Nowadays the pass is used above all by tourists.
