Image collection »Maria Weißenstein«

Maria Weißenstein is a monastery and pilgrimage church near Deutschnhofen and is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in South Tyrol. In 1553 the mountain farmer Leonhard Weißensteiner built a chapel here after the Virgin Mary appeared to him on this spot. The chapel soon became a place of pilgrimage and for this reason the chapel which had become too small was extended to a church in 1673. The two popes, John Paul I and John Paul II visited Maria Weißenstein and aroused new interest in this pilgrimage church.
