St. Georgenberg, the pilgrimage church well-known far beyond the boundaries of Tyrol, is also called the monastery of the rock because of its spectacular location. The church is situated on an exposed rock high above the stream of the Stanzer Bach and visitors are only able to reach it by means of a wooden bridge. In 1138 the little church was raised to the status of a Benedictine abbey by the pope. The baroque pilgrimage church one sees today, was originally built in a Romanesque style. A number of great misfortunes have struck the abbey over the centuries and has burnt down to its foundations four times. At the beginning of the 18th century the official abbey was transferred down into the Inn Valley to Fiecht. However, to this day the church of Georgenberg has remained a centre of attraction for pilgrims. A visit to the pilgrimage church can be combined with a walk through the impressive Wolfsklamm gorge near Stans.
