Castle Hocheppan stands in isolated splendour on a 600m high rock near Missian and was built for defensive purposes by Count Ulrich II of Eppan between 1125 and 1130. When the counts of Eppan died out, the castle fell into the hands of their enemies, the Counts of Tyrol. Finally the castle was left to its own fate and allowed to fall into ruin. It was only in the 20th century that under the leadership of the South Tyrolean Preservation Society that restoration was begun which have not as yet been completed. The frescoes of the detached castle chapel, which had been covered with numerous coats of paint over the centuries, were only discovered in the 20th century are of particular historical value. A further characteristic of this castle is the five-sided 30m high keep. Nowadays Hocheppan is open to the public daily and there is a castle inn.
