The castle in the Lienzer Klause was built at a strategically important location in the Pustertal valley. The entire traffic through the valley could be controlled at this narrow point near Leisach. The bishops of Brixen built the castle in 1240 but it soon fell into the hands of the Counts of Görz. The Lienzer Klause played an important role in the Tyrolean People's Revolt of 1809. Here one prevented the onward march through the Pustertal of the French general Rusca. Nowadays the castle is a ruin, only the keep bears witness to the important role it played in the Pustertal valley.
