Image collection »Fortress Kufstein«

Fortress Kufstein lies on an inaccessible inclination above the River Inn, from where it guards the entrance to the "Land im Gebirge" (land in the mountains). The fortress did not always belong to the Tyrol. In the Middle Ages the fortress was hard fought. Only in 1504 Emperor Maximilian finally managed to capture it from Bavaria. To do so he brought the two canons "Purlepaus" and "Weckauf" from Innsbruck. The fortress houses the famous "Heldenorgel" (Hero's Organ). From time to time concerts and events take place in it too. Today the fortress houses the museum of local history, where object founds of the "Tischoferhöhle" are shown.
