Image collection »Castle Itter«
Castle Itter lies on a hill at the entrance to the Brixental. This was the place from which the entrance to the valley was controlled. The castle was once at the border between Bavaria and Salzburg and later between the Tyrol and Salzburg. In the second half of the 19th century the ruins of the original castle were used to build a romantic castle in a fancy architectural style. During World War II the castle was used as an outpost of the concentration camp Dachau. High ranking French politicians were imprisoned here. Today Castle Itter is used for private purposes.
