Neuschwanstein, which is frequently referred to as the "fairy tale castle", was built under the Bavarian king Ludwig II. Neuschwanstein, where building began in 1869, nowadays ranks among the most important examples of historicist architecture. The castle was built and furnished in medieval style but using the most advanced technology of the time, so that, for example, light iron constructions were already used. Neuschwanstein sits in all its splendour on a rock high above the Pöllatschlucht gorge in the Ammergau Alps and offers breathtaking views over the numerous lakes of the East Allgäu. Seven weeks after Ludwig's death in 1886 the castle, which had formerly been the private retreat of the king, was opened to the public. In the meantime Schloss Neuschwanstein has become a symbol of Bavaria and has 1.3 million visitors a year.
