Image collection »Castle Tyrol«

The entire province was named after Castle Tyrol. It was built by the Counts of Vinschgau in 1100 on the gentle slopes of a hill, close to a rift. Castle Tyrol overlooks the wide land. The castle was not built at a strategic location, where it would be easy to defend. Its main purpose was to represent the power and the prestige of its owners. Today it houses South Tyrol's provincial museum for cultural and provincial history. A special treasure is the oldest coloured picture of the Tyrolean eagle.
