Castle Juval is located at the end of the Schnalstal valley on an exposed site on a rock outcrop with a steep drop on three sides. The castle was built in approximately 1200 by Hugo of Montalban. As was the case with almost the entire Vinschgau, Castle Juval also fell under the ownership of the Counts of Tyrol. The castle the frequently changed hands up into the 20th century so that it slowly began to show signs of dilapidation. The famous South Tyrolean climber, Reinhold Messner, then acquired the castle in 1983 and with the agreement of the Historical Preservation Society adapted the castle for his artistic collection "Mythos Berg" (Legends of the Mountains). Nowadays Castle Juval and the so-called "Messner Moiuntain Museum Juval" attract many visitors and it is one of the cultural highlights of the Vinschgau.
