Fragenstein, which is now a ruin, was built around 1200 by the Counts of Andechs. It is, however, assumed that a Roman watch tower already stood on the site of the castle as the location is close to the former Via Claudia. In 1284 Count Meinhard II raised Fragenstein to a court of legal jurisdiction and this function gave the castle its name. Duke Sigmund and Emperor Maximilian I used the castle for hunting trips into the Karwendel mountains. When the Bavarian troops marched in they partly blew up the castle and then at the end of the 19th century parts of the castle fell into the Schlossbergklamm gorge. Fragenstein gradually fell to ruin a process only recently stopped by a citizens' initiative and the people of Zirl.
