Schloss Bernegg castle was built by the gentlefolk of Berneck at the beginning of the 13th century. Nowadays the castle lies within the community of Kauns in the Kaunertal valley. The southern side of the castle borders directly onto an approximately 130m steep drop to the Fagge. In 1437 Castle Bernegg was renovated by the then liegeman Hans von Mülinen. During this work the castle chapel was added. Frequent change of ownership after 1870 resulted in almost complete dilapidation. It was only first renovation work at the end of the 20th century that rescued Bernegg from complete ruin. Nowadays Schloss Bernegg is open to the public during the summer months.
