Corine

Since the mid-1960s land use and its changes have been uniformly recorded and processed throughout Europe. Within the framework of the CORINE-program, experts from all EU member states are evaluating the digital satellite photographs. Data is processed in a Geographical Information System (GIS) and is then available as a digital map at a scale of 1:100.000. In this way, comparably important information concerning land use and any changes are at the disposal of almost the whole of Europe.

Land use data for the Tirol Atlas is based on satellite photos from the year 2000. Objects smaller than 25 hectares or long elements less than 100 m in width have not been included.

The Europe-wide uniform nomenclature has 44 classes. The area covered by the Tirol Atlas only includes 34 of these. In the overview map these have been combined into 13 categories that clarify typical land use in the alpine region.
